2022 Fellowship Midland Lunch

April 20, 2022

The Fellowship’s Midlands Lunch was held at the British Motor Museum Conference Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire on Wednesday 20th April 2022.

One hundred and forty Fellows and guests attended the event; well up on the 2021 figures, which was encouraging.

An opening welcome was given by the Fellowship’s Chairman, Peter Leake. In his trademark ebullient style, Peter welcomed everyone and gave an encouraging update of membership numbers since the September 2021 lunch and provided an overview of forthcoming events that he encouraged people to attend.

An excellent lunch was provided by the museum’s chefs, and this was followed by the now traditional, fund-raising game of ‘Heads and Tails’, admirably hosted by our President, Peter Lewis-Jones. The game raised £1,425 plus Gift Aid for BEN which was thankfully received by Matt Wigginton, the charity’s Director of Partnerships, Engagement, and Income.

The toast to the Fellowship was proposed by Mike Wilds, a racing driver and performance driving coach. He entertained the audience with the story of how he first got into motor racing and how he progressed through the various disciplines to fulfil his teenage dream of being a Formula1 racer. A really interesting speech from a lovely self-effacing gentleman that was much appreciated by everyone. Mike then kindly provided a signed limited-edition print to be auctioned, which raised an amazing £360 for fellowship funds thanks to some enthusiastic bidding, finally won by fellow Roy Dower.

Peter Leake, Chairman, reflecting on the day said “What another tremendous event and it was so very good to see so many fellows and guests enjoying the opportunity to meet up, despite the shadow of Covid still hanging over us. It was clear when looking around the many tables that conversations were lively and full of laughter. Mike Wilds was a really top speaker and great company. It was also pleasing to know that we had a flurry of applications for membership during and after the event.”

Our thanks to everyone who supported this key event in the Fellowship’s calendar, and we hope to see you again at other events during 2022, as advertised on the website.
