National Memorial Arboretum

September 25 @ 10:15 am - 12:45 pm

£35.00

We were a select band on Wednesday 25th September. We had booked two seven seater buggies but only needed one. We could not have asked for a better volunteer guide, Paul Nicholson. His knowledge was outstanding and he was more than willing to take us to spots that were of particular interest to us. We also attended the short daily act of remembrance in the chapel.

By coincidence, the Duke of Gloucester was attending a service in memory of the Glorious Gloaters on the same day. It was also the last day of remembering 80 years since Operation Market Garden (Arnhem). After Paul’s two hours of showing us around we had lunch in the restaurant before some members continued their visit on foot.

The National Memorial Arboretum is geographically well placed with more than 400 memorials set in 150 acres. It was the idea of Commander David Childs CBE who, having been inspired by a visit to Arlington Cemetery and the National Arboretum in Washington, believed a year-round national centre of remembrance was needed in the UK to ensure we never forget.

Now managed by the Royal British Legion, it is well worth a visit. There is a free “land train” to take you around but a guided buggy tour is recommended.

Thanks goes to David Lansdowne for organising this really worthwhile event.
